Diversification Lanco Infratech in talks with US, European EPCs for N-foray V. Rishi Kumar Hyderabad, Sept. 12 Lanco Infratech Ltd is in talks with European and US-based engineering procurement contractors (EPCs) for the group’s foray into nuclear power generation, according to the Lanco Group Chairman, Mr L. Madhusudhan Rao. Mr Rao, now touring Europe, told Business Line that the company expects to finalise the nuclear energy generation plan within six to eight months and also the quantum of investment required. Welcoming the Government’s move to encourage private sector developers in nuclear power, Mr Rao said the company expects a more detailed policy framework from the Government, which would help chart out the business plan. “As a group, we have stated our objective to be engaged with all forms of energy generation, and this includes nuclear energy, as and when we are allowed to enter. Now is the time to take up this new initiative,” Mr Rao said. Lanco Infratech recently announced its intent to enter into wind energy and solar power generation, with a significant investment outlay in the latter. Asked about the quantum of investments in nuclear power generation, Mr Rao said “it will take a few months to come out with a detailed plan based on the outcome of our discussions with EPCs and firms overseas.” However, Mr Rao said “the nuclear energy generation is capital intensive and we are looking at big plants in the range of 1,000 MW. Typically, it is estimated that for one MW of nuclear energy capacity, the investments required are in the range of $1.5 million to $1.7 million (Rs 6.82 crore to Rs 7.72 crore).” More Stories on : Diversification | Infrastructure | Power
