Rlys should use double-decker coaching stock, says panel

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Sept. 12 The Railways should try to use double-decker coaching stock on busy routes, apart from seeking increased budgetary support from the Government, in view of its important role as an environment-friendly means of transport. These are some of the steps that an ‘Informal Advisory Committee’, comprising former chairmen and members of Railway Board, has recommended.

The committee was set up with the idea of deliberating on future strategies of the Railways, said an official release. It also opined that public private partnership (PPP) in the Railway sector in general is difficult and it may involve the Railways sharing its earnings with the concessionaire.

The important points that emerged from the meeting of the committee include the need for a mechanism to monitor and ensure optimisation of road and railway transport, quick action on the provision of road over and under bridges to handle the problem of level crossings, particularly on the dedicated freight corridor routes.

It also called for increased usage of new design of coaches and evolving a policy whereby there can be increased participation in projects by State Governments.
