Bindu D. Menon Recently in Singapore Tata Consultancy Services will be expanding its training infrastructure footprint across the geographies in a bid to create a constant supply of talent. Besides developing talent pool from lesser known IT destinations, like Uruguay, Hungary, Vietnam and the Philippines, the company said these countries can provide low-costs advantages in times of rising costs. “We will be spending at least four per cent of our revenue only on training. Talent is the biggest asset and we will be make continuous investments into the same,” Mr Girija P. Pande, Executive Vice-President and Head Asia Pacific, TCS, said, adding that the company has 67 nationals working under its brand umbrella. He said China will continue to be a focus for TCS to expand its talent as the skill-set levels in the region are high.
“China will be a key focus for us as it has both skill and scale for us to grow. Currently, Chinese companies are not too IT-focused. This is a competitive advantage for us since we have already established a presence in the region,” Mr Pande said. Observing that the company has been recruiting globally to tide over talent issues, he said that attrition is the lowest in China and job satisfaction the highest. “We will invest and train Chinese youth to capture the raw talent available. Our aim is to become a role model for Chinese IT firms.” The company generated consolidated revenues of $5.7 billion for March 31, 2008. The trainings are broadly in areas like domain skills, sales and services competencies. On margins, he said rising costs were squeezing margins and TCS is also getting into products besides services.
