Lufthansa may hike fares on India-Germany route

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi, Sept. 14 Flying between India and Germany could become more expensive starting next week. This follows an announcement by the German Airline, Lufthansa, that from the coming Friday, it will raise passenger fares by an average of 4.8 per cent worldwide.

Sources from the airline told Business Line that a decision on the amount to be increased was yet to be taken but will be announced next week.

In a communication to traders, the airline has said that the increase has been necessitated to offset the general cost increase that is affecting the global airline industry.

The global price increase applies to all tickets that are booked or issued on or after September 19 this year as well as to all flights taken on or after that day, the airline has said.

Lower fuel surcharge

The move comes days after Lufthansa announced that it was decreasing the fuel surcharge. Lufthansa has reduced fuel surcharges for those travelling on two connecting intercontinental flights in the same journey. Passengers, previously paying $420 as fuel surcharge for a round ticket from India to any of its destination in the US or Canada, will now be able to save $100 as the fuel surcharge has been reduced to $320.

The reduction in fuel surcharge came into effect from September 8.

Lufthansa operates more flights than any other European airlines.

The current schedule includes daily flights between Delhi-Frankfurt, Delhi-Munich, Mumbai-Frankfurt, Mumbai-Munich, Chennai-Frankfurt, Bangalore-Frankfurt, Hyderabad-Frankfurt and flights three times a week in the Kolkata-Frankfurt route.
