‘Money not a priority for students choosing a company’

Study says they look for a rich learning experience.

Chennai, Sept. 17 Monetary reward ranks fifth in the order of students’ expectations from their employers. The top four preferences are a rich learning experience, practical exposure, work-life balance and diversity in experience, according to a Hewitt Consulting study.

Monetary reward is more of a “hygiene” factor and it has to be comparable to industry standards. It is not the most important thing for students when they choose a company, Mr Ajit Mathai, Director, Hewitt, told newspersons on the dipstick survey of American Chamber of Commerce in India member companies in Tamil Nadu and educational institutions.

The survey was done in July-August and involved around 50 colleges, students, and 50 member companies across sectors of the Chamber. The survey was to ascertain views and perceptions of the gap in expectations between the academia and the recruiting companies, he said.

The study was conducted as a prelude to the experiential and interactive HR workshop aimed at helping the academia appreciate “What It Takes to Work For a Global Organisation”, to be organised by the Chamber on September 20.

In the first session, participants will visit facilities of Ford and Cognizant and in the second session, over 20 CEOs and HR heads of the chamber’s member companies will spend time interacting with students and faculty, he said.
