Campco wants to enter rubber segment

Plans to amend bye-laws in relation to its marketing.

A.J. Vinayak

Mangalore, Sept. 18 The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd — which is actively involved in the business of arecanut and cocoa — is planning to enter the segment of rubber. In this regard, the cooperative is planning to amend its bye-laws. Campco will seek the approval of its members in the annual general meeting on September 20.

Mr S.R. Rangamurthy, President of Campco, told Business Line that the entry into the rubber segment will help both the growers and the cooperative. Stating that many grower-members of Campco grow rubber along with arecanut and cocoa in their plantations, he said this move to amend bye-laws to include rubber will provide facilities for members to market their additional crop — rubber.

“We will seek the permission of members at the annual general meeting for bye-law amendment. Based on the permission, we may enter the rubber market next year,” he said.

Bye-law details

To include rubber commodity in its business, the cooperative will seek permission for the amendment of bye-laws related to ‘area of operation’, ‘objects’, ‘marketing activities’ and ‘business rules’.

The proposed amendment to bye-law number 2 on ‘area of operation’ of the cooperative says that the area of operation of Campco shall extend to Karnataka and Kerala.

“However, for the purpose of purchase, processing and sale of arecanut, cocoa and rubber, there shall be no restriction on the area of operation,” it says.

One of the proposed amendments for bye-law number 4 on ‘objects’ plans to “promote scientific research on planting, growing, harvesting, processing, fermentation, preservation, and manufacture of semi-finished and finished products of arecanut, cocoa and rubber”.
