EoIs invited for titanium complex

Mony K. Mathew

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 18 The Kerala Government has invited expressions of interest (EoIs) for setting up a titanium complex in the State.

The proposed complex, comprising plants for the manufacture of titanium sponge, metal and downstream products, is proposed in the vicinity of the state-owned Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd. (KMML), leading manufacturer of rutile grade titanium dioxide, near Kollam.

The annual capacity of the titanium sponge plant is proposed to be 10,000 tonnes and the bidder for setting up the facility should possess the required technology and also be currently operating a similar plant, according to officials in the Industries Department.

Strategic partner

The State Government will be the strategic partner in the project with a minimum equity participation of 26 per cent in the sponge plant. The equity participation of the Government in the metal and downstream products plants is kept as negotiable.

Apart from rutile grade titanium dioxide, which is the main product, KMML is also engaged in the manufacture of other products such as titanium tetrachloride. The Government has offered to make available the required quantity of titanium tetrachloride at market price from KMML for the manufacture of titanium sponge.
