BHPV board to be reconstituted soon

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, Sept. 18

The board of the Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels (BHPV) here, taken over by the BHEL, is to be reconstituted soon, probably in a day or two, according to sources here. The Union Ministry for Heavy Industry has taken a decision to this effect, it is learnt.

One of the unresolved issues at BHPV is the long-pending wage revision. The workers have been promised a decision on the issue after the board has been reconstituted. The employees of the BHPV, currently numbering 1,300, are still getting 1992 wages and are agitated. Three wage revisions are due since then (every five years) and it is not clear when a decision will be taken.

BHEL had made an announcement at the time of the takeover that BHPV will be developed as a centre for manufacture of industrial boilers, especially for the power sector, and since then an order for boiler parts worth Rs 30 crore (placed on BHEL, Tiruchi), has been diverted to BHPV.

On Thursday, BHPV received an order worth Rs 25 crore from the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd here (the Visakhapatnam steel plant) for fabrication of oxygen buffer vessels. The fabrication work was inaugurated by Mr Sambyal, Executive Director (Projects) of RINL, in the presence of Mr Om Prakash, Managing Director of BHPV, and Mr P. Phalguna Rao, Executive Director, BHPV.

At present, the BHPV has orders worth Rs 160 crore on hand and is concentrating on executing them on time.
