Railways Rlys freight earnings up 20% New Delhi, Sept. 18 Railways continued to register a higher growth rate (almost 20 per cent) in freight earnings than the corresponding growth rate in loadings (8.62 per cent) on account of the several rounds of increase in freight charges during the last one year. The freight charges went up on account of changes in classifications and imposition of various surcharges such as busy season surcharge and busy route surcharge. Railways registered a 19.82 per cent growth in revenues from freight traffic during April-August 2008 with revenues touching Rs 21499.66 crore against Rs 17943.23 crore during the corresponding period last year, said an official release. Railways carried 336 million tonnes (mt) of freight traffic during the period against 309.34 mt during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 8.62 per cent, it added. The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) — a performance parameter that reflects the combined effect of increase in loadings and lead — touched 217,231 million during April-August 2008, up 9.64 per cent from 19,8140 million during April-August 2007. — Our Bureau More Stories on : Railways
