Bank strike: Conciliatory talks today

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi, Sept. 18 The Government has called the bank unions and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) for conciliatory talks to prevent the two-day all-India bank strike proposed for September 24 and 25.

“The Chief Labour Commissioner has invited the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and IBA for conciliatory talks on Friday,” banking industry sources said. The Finance Ministry had recently said that the proposed strike was unjustified and uncalled for.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Finance Ministry’s statement, Mr C.H. Venkatachalam, Convenor, UFBU, told Business Line that since the Government has reiterated the reform policies that it wishes to undertake, there was no scope for reconsidering the strike call and that UFBU will proceed with the strike as scheduled.
