FieldTurf Tarkett unveils non-grass sports surfaces

Phalguna Jandhyala

Hyderabad, Sept. 19

FieldTurf Tarkett (India), the sole licensee of Montreal-based FieldTurf Tarkett in the SAARC region, has launched a range of non-grass sports surfaces for indoor and outdoor sports in the Indian market.

"The company introduced a next-generation artificial grass in India in 2004. Now, we are launching synthetic athletic tracks and sports surfaces for basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton and other indoor and outdoor sports," Mr Anil Kumar, Managing Director, FieldTurf Tarkett (India), told Business Line here.

Since its launch the company has so far completed 1,000 installations covering five lakh sq ft mostly in the landscaping segment. It has also done the first FIFA standard football ground in the SAARC region at the Chowgule College in Goa by using artificial grass and also an indoor cricket facility in Hyderabad.

"The grass is maintenance free (watering, fertilising, weeding and so on, not required) and has a life of 15 to 25 years. It is ideal where natural grass does not grow or difficult to maintain," Mr Kumar said.

He added that the company has a dozen varieties within the grass segment and the range is between Rs 195 per sq foot and Rs 400 a sq foot.

"The products are imported from either the US or France depending on the works and the cost includes import, customs duty, installation," he said.

The company, which had a turnover of Rs 4 crore last fiscal, also offers PVC, wooden floor and synthetic surfaces at varying costs.

The company has 14 distributors and has recently appointed one in Sri Lanka. "In the next 12-18 months the target is to have a distributor in every part of the country," Mr Kumar said.
