Co-op shops record Rs 51 cr Onam sales

Thiruvananthapuam, Sept 19 The cooperative retail shops recorded sales to the tune of Rs 51 crore during the Onam season in Kerala this year.

The sales took place through as many as 4,000 retail shops during the one-month period between August 17 and September 17 and the turnover was Rs 21 crore more than the Rs 30 crore recorded during the Onam season last year, according to the Minister for Cooperation and Coir Development, Mr G. Sudhakaran.

Essential items

He said here on Friday that according to estimates, 1.5 crore people from 45 lakh households purchased essential items from these shops, where the prices were much less than the open market prices.

A total of 18,588 tonnes of different varieties of rice were sold through the shops. With sales of Rs 4.89 crore, Kozhikode district topped the list, followed by Kollam (Rs 4.30 crore), Thrissur (Rs 4.18 crore) and Thiruvananthapuram (Rs 4.15 crore).

The Minister said that during the 28 months between the Onam seasons of 2006 and 2008, the cooperative shops recorded total sales of Rs 202.17 crore.

Against this, the Kerala State Cooperative Consumers’ Federation (Consumerfed) was entitled to a Government subsidy of Rs 53.40 crore and the Finance Department had so far released Rs 15 crore towards it.

He said that a meeting of the officials of the State Cooperative Bank and district cooperative of banks of Palakkad, Thrissur, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha had decided to purchase paddy harvesting machines.
