‘Push for liberalisation to eliminate poverty’

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Sept. 20 The former Spanish Prime Minister, Mr Jose Maria Aznar, has said developing countries such as India should further the process of liberalisation to eliminate poverty.

“More liberalisation means lower tariffs. Lower tariffs means more competition. More competition would allow more companies to enter the domestic market, which in turn would generate more employment,” said Mr Jose Maria Aznar, who is here on a five-day visit to meet industry and government officials to evaluate the areas of cooperation between the two countries.

Myopic vision

Addressing a FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) seminar on ‘Restructuring of the Global Architecture’, Mr Aznar said: “The success of the multilateral negotiations of the Doha Round is more important than ever before and it upsets me to see that a great part of the political class in Europe and the US remains anchored to protectionist positions, something that is not what development and the fight against poverty demand.”

Mr Aznar attributed mainly lack of political leadership and shortage of vision blocking multilateral negotiations. “Europe and the US harm themselves with such short-sighted policies,” he stated.
