High prices at Coonoor tea sales

Coonoor, Sept. 21 Market turned feverishly high when demand was strong enough to absorb the 24-week low offer of 10.15 lakh kg at Sale No. 38 of the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) on Friday.

About 50 marks of CTC teas from bought-leaf factories shot into the Rs 100 price-band. Six marks of Darmona Estate, auctioned by J Thomas and Co, fetched over Rs 100 a kg. Homedale Factory, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, created a record with 8 marks entering into Rs 100 price-band in a single auctionAmong orthodox teas from corporate sector, Chamraj got Rs 155 a kg, Havukal Rs 152, Curzon Rs 148, Nonsuch Rs 144, Mailoor Rs 133, Coonoor Tea Rs 126, Terramia and Kairbetta Rs 125 each. In all, about 40 marks fetched over Rs 100.

Pakistan’s purchases were subdued as their bids were outpriced. CIS selected medium grades from Rs 67 to 71 a kg. Iraq bought CTC leaf for Rs 78. Egypt paid up to Rs 83 for select invoices. Poland shippers preferred plainer sorts for around Rs 65.

Internal demand

Among corporate buyers, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Tata Tea Ltd and Duncans Tea Ltd were the mainstay of the CTC dust market.

“Internal demand was strong. Orthodox leaf fetched Rs 5 to 10 a kg more. Some odd invoices sold dearer by Rs 10-15. Secondaries were up by Rs 2-3. CTC brighter liquoring leaf fetched Rs 7-10 more. Better medium got Rs 8 higher. Plainers also fetched Rs 5-7 more. Smaller brokens were up by Rs 8-10. Secondary orthodox dusts got Rs 2-4 more. Primary grades and residuals were up by Rs 3-4. CTC dust market was dearer by Rs 10-15 for brighter liquoring sorts. Better mediums got Rs 5-8 more. Plainers were up by Rs 6-7,” an auctioneer told Business Line.
