AP plans varsities in districts, more polytechnic colleges

To focus on providing IT education to talented rural youth.


The State Government has established Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies centres with three IIIT campuses in different regions of the State.

Hyderabad, Sept. 22 Focussing on higher education, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, is keen to establish a university in every district of the State.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, establishment of a university in every district will help meet the requirement of higher education and address the changing needs of the global economy.

This statement follows a meeting the Chief Minister had with the Chairman of State Council of Higher Education, Mr K.C. Reddy, and officials on Monday.

During the last three years, the State Government has established 17 universities. The State has 42 universities, including 16 specialised universities.

In addition to these colleges, the State Government has decided to start 22 polytechnic colleges in the Government sector during 2008-09.

Five university constituent engineering colleges have been started through Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University. Besides, three medical colleges have been started — at Srikakulam, Adilabad and Ongole.

Dr Reddy mentioned the State’s plan to start 11 Gurukulam Centres and its plans to have one such centre in each district to provide quality IT education to talented rural youth.

To nurture talent among rural students, the State Government has established Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies centres with three IIIT campuses in different regions of the State.

The selection of students in IIITs is based on the principle of inducting the best from local areas, thereby giving representation to every rural mandal. These students will have personalised mentors and experienced tutors.

Labs and research

Jawahar Knowledge Centres have been established in more than 600 institutions with each of them having a well-equipped computer laboratory. This programme has been successful in encouraging youths to take up challenging careers. The State Government is motivating students to enter research in sciences at an young age.

Referring to Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of Higher Education, the statement mentioned that it was 11.52 in Andhra Pradesh as against the all India average of 9.97. Most of the developed nations have GER of more than 20. To improve GER, the Government has initiated several steps to increase access to higher education.
