Tea import bills cost Rs 15 cr more

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Sept. 22

Tea import bills in the first half of 2008 had increased Rs 15 crore over the corresponding period in 2007, an analysis of the information available with the Tea Board shows.

This happened because India imported a higher volume, despite the price rising marginally. Between January and June 2008, India imported 8.22 million kg (mkg) at an average price of Rs 74.02 a kg against 6.25 mkg at Rs 73.43 in the corresponding period in 2007. Consequently, the overall import bill rose to Rs 60.81 crore from Rs 45.88 crore.

India imported teas from about 15 countries, including from some trading sources.

Largest source

Volume-wise, the largest import of 2.93 mkg (last year 1.95 mkg) came from Nepal followed by Indonesia 1.77 mkg (1.02) and Kenya 1.63 mkg (1.34). Tea from Sri Lanka which enjoys the concessional duty of 7.5 per cent totalled at 2.15 lakh kg (1.62 lakh kg).

Value-wise, India paid the highest import bill of Rs 20.3 crore (Rs 13 crore) to Nepal, followed by Rs 15.41 crore (Rs 10.54) to Kenya and Rs 10.39 crore (Rs 7.36) to Indonesia.

Price-wise, India paid the highest price of Rs 203.23 a kg (Rs 211.84) to the UK, followed by Rs 187.70 (Rs 147.78) to Sri Lanka. Vietnam teas were the cheapest at Rs 49.21 (Rs 51.44).
