‘Students must be taught to convert knowledge into wealth’

Tumkur, Sept 22

Business schools in India have a challenge before them to impart to its students “ability to convert knowledge into wealth”, Mr P.V. Arunachalam, former Vice-Chancellor of Dravidian University, said here on Monday.

Inaugurating the orientation programme for the XII batch of MBA students at the Sri Siddhartha Institute of Management Studies (SSIMS) here, Prof Arunachalam said, “Tradition and religion determined the pattern of higher education in the past. Knowledge was then considered pure, and kept far away from matters of wealth”.

“Later, rationalism and scientific spirit defined the nature of education and that led to many useful discoveries in science and technology. Currently, knowledge is the defining factor of all sections of higher education. Management studies have been pervading all sectors. Intermixing knowledge and wealth is the key now”, he said.

Prof Arunachalam said business schools should impart management training to politicians also in order to make them eminent statesmen.

Mr R. Mohan, director of Hinduja Telecom Media Technology Ltd, Bangalore, said the corporate world expected business schools to equip their students with ability to adopt and deliver their best. He said recession abroad was no cause for any worry. There was still “big unfulfilled demand” (for trained managers) in many sectors, including agriculture.
