Hyderabad, Sept. 22 The first World Congress for Disaster Management (WCDM)-2008 to be held at Hyderabad next month will chart out the course of action for an integrated approach to tackling disasters — both natural and man-made.

Over 300 delegates and representatives from across the world will converge during the event slated for October 21-24 at the National Academy of Construction (NAC) here.

The Chairman of the Steering Committee of WCDM-2008 and Chief Controller of R&D, DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Dr Prahalada, said the objective is to share global knowledge on advanced technologies in mitigation methodologies and control systems of disasters on a common platform.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday after a meeting of the steering committee of WCDM, Dr Prahalada said the event will serve as a platform for scientists, technologists, academicians and administrators from India and abroad to deliberate on best practices and exchange learning for mutual benefit.

Recognising excellence

As a part of the conference being hosted with active participation by NRSA, ISRO and the Government of Andhra Pradesh, it is proposed to recognise excellence and outstanding contribution in disaster management by individuals, institutions and organisations, and also maintaining their zone of operations free from disasters.

The former President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will be the chief guest. The conference will have more than 70 technical papers and over 30 talks on various subjects that need to be addressed by the WCDM.

At the end of the conference, WCDM expects to come out with a comprehensive action plan on how to go about handling disasters in an integrated manner. This report will be presented to the Government for follow-up action plan.
