New Delhi, Sept 24 Agents of non-residents have been exempted from mandatory electronic filing of income-tax returns for assessment year 2008-09.

For assessment year 2008-09, the tax department had in March this year stipulated that companies are required to furnish their returns of income electronically.

The same norm was also applied for firms coming under tax audit.

With the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) receiving representations that agents were facing difficulties in electronically furnishing the returns of non-residents, it has now been decided to exempt the agents from this requirement for the assessment year 2008-09.

“Such situations are not covered by the existing software, which functions on the principle of one assessee — one PAN and one return,” according to a CBDT statement here.
