Trailer strike called off at Kochi Port

Kochi, Sept. 25 The 3-day-old strike resorted to by container trailer crew at Kochi Port has been withdrawn on Thursday afternoon after suspending the CISF officer concerned who was involved in the fracas with the trailer crew.

The Port Chairman, Mr N. Ramachandran, has convened an urgent meeting with the trade unions, container trailer owners and other port users to end the strike. The Chairman informed the meeting that the CISF Commandant had already initiated action against the officer after conducting an enquiry.

Mr P.M. Mohammed Haneef, Working President of the Cochin Port Staff Association, who participated in the conciliatory talks, told Business Line that the police have also been requested to speed up the investigation into the incidents and book the culprits.

The meeting was also taken note of the congestion experiencing at the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal and the DP World officials had agreed to open another gate at Q-10 berth for the movement of trailers from the terminal subject to the approval of the Customs Commissioner. It was also decided to make some arrangements to transport containers through Ernakulam Wharf gate so as to avoid congestion, he said.

The conciliatory meeting also decided to constitute a committee to deal with such incidents arising of industrial matters in future. The committee headed by Traffic Manager will have representatives from trade unions, DP World, trailer owners association and steamer agents association, he added.

Mr Suresh Joseph, General Manager, DP World said that in order to avoid congestion in the terminal, the company has decided to concentrate on import deliveries and loading on to the vessel so as to free the yard. There will not be any import discharge from vessels for the next few days as at present there are about 5,600 import teus in lying in the terminal.
