Discoms can share green building benefits

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Sept. 25 The Bureau of Energy Efficiency is in talks with Electricity Regulators of States to see if some kind of benefit sharing could come about between power distribution companies and energy efficient buildings (green buildings), said the Director-General of the Bureau, Dr Ajay Mathur.

Speaking at the international conference of the Green Building Congress 2008 here on Thursday, he said while commercial spaces on an average grew by 9 per cent annually, power consumption went up by 12.5 per cent.

This warranted attention as it was unsustainable.

More must be done

Commending the Confederation of Indian Industry for its efforts to propagate the green concept, he said more had to be done. It was important to reach out to architects and architect schools so that the principles of energy efficiency got integrated at the concept stage when pencil was put to paper.

The Central Public Works Department was another agency that could bring about a significant change in energy consumption as their designs were copied or reproduced by other government agencies.
