Barbeque Nation set to become separate entity

Our Bureau

Pune, Sept 25

In order to become a speciality restaurant, the Indore-based Barbeque Nation and a wholly- owned subsidiary of Sayaji Hotels is all set to hive off its business into a separate entity.

Talking to Business Line, Mr Prosenjit Roy Choudhary, Chief Executive Officer, Barbeque Nation, said the process is already on and it would take another six months for the legal formalities to be completed after which it would become a separate entity.

He said five outlets which are currently in the management of Sayaji, would be transferred to Barbeque Nation.

Expansion plans

Regarding other plans, he said it is also looking out for funds to cater to its expansion plans. He said talks are already on with venture funds as well as other financial organisations for about Rs 50 crore.

Barbeque Nation rolled out its first outlet in 2006 in Mumbai and currently has 14 outlets spread across the country, with Pune being the 15th. This is the first venture in the country which has live charcoal grill on the dining table.

Each table has a sunken pit in the centre where a table grill with hot coal is placed with the skewers starters flowing in an unlimited fashion of five vegetarian and five non-vegetarian varieties.

The choice of barbeques is drawn from PanAsian, Oriental, Mediterranean and Continental cuisines and perfected for the Indian palate. The barbeques are 90 per cent cooked and the final touches are given by the customer according to their taste.

European design

Commenting on the Barbeque Nation, he said the outlets have been designed on the lines of a European Country Home offering a friendly ambience with exposed brick cladding and worn wood walls.

The first outlet in Pune has a seating capacity of 220 in Kalyani Nagar. The first phase of expansion would see another two outlets in Pune, the locations being Aundh, Deccan. He noted that the Pune outlet is one property that has been bought by Barbeque while noting that most of its properties are leased.

He said an investment of Rs. 3.5 crore is utilised by Barbeque for the setting up of its each outlet. He said the plan is to touch 50 outlets by the end of the current fiscal and four locations, Kolkata, Amritsar, Jalandhar and Noida would begin operations soon.

He noted that it is planning to have multi locations in Tier I and II cities. Asked about the revenues, he said it had closed the last fiscal with a turnover of Rs. 25 crores and was targetting close to Rs. 60 crore for the current fiscal.

He said it was also looking at other options such as takeaways, outdoor caterings, barbeque on wheels and also outlets in the malls as part of its expansion plans.

Mr Choudhary added that Sayaji Hotels which has its hotels in Indore and Baroda has already begun construction of a 257 room restaurant in Wakad, which would be completed before the beginning of the Commonwealth Games, scheduled to begin in Pune from October12.
