Hyderabad, Sept. 26

Dr L.S. Shashidhara, a scientist at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, has been selected for the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Biological Sciences for 2008 for his research contributions in Developmental Biology. Using the fruit fly Drosophila as a model system, Dr Shashidhara is addressing two fundamental questions in biology: What is the mechanism by which the various cells/tissues/organs are positioned in their respective places in our body? How are shapes and sizes of organs determined? Dr Shashidhara and his research colleagues have made significant contributions in the area. The award carries a prize of Rs 5 lakh, a citation and a plaque. It will be presented to Dr Shashidhara by the Prime Minister. The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prizes are awarded annually by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, for notable and outstanding research.
