Karnataka’s speed-check directive

The Karnataka Government, it is learnt, is firm in its resolve to implement its decision to retrofit speed governors on all commercial vehicles, not only those registered in the State but also those passing through Karnataka, the idea being to curb reckless driving. The decision has understandably evoked sharp reaction from the owners of commercial vehicles in the State, so much so that the Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners’ Association has threatened to stop oper ation of vehicles by its members from the midnight of September 30 in protest against the Government’s decision. New Delhi-based All India Confederation of Goods Vehicles Owners’ Association (AICOGOA), an apex body of vehicle operators, too, is believed to have thrown its weight behind its affiliate in Karnataka arguing the there is no reason for the Karnataka Government to be in a hurry with regard to a issue that is pending before Supreme Court and which is also being examined by the Union Government. The Union Government, according to AICOGOA, is already seized with the issue of controlling speed of commercial vehicles, both goods and passenger vehicles, plying on the new highways and is expected to come out with some favourable decision in this regard by prescribing the maximum speed limits to be applicable uniformly throughout the country. If that happens, the State Governments might be stripped of its powers on speed governors and it will be sad for the supplier of the equipment.
