Agri-Biz & Commodities - Tea
Prices dearer at N. Indian tea sale

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Sept. 28

Last week, CTC teas at Guwahati and Kolkata auctions once again sold readily at firm to dearer rates. The levels at Siliguri auctions, however, were around last and irregularly lower particularly for teas showing a decline in quality. The major blender and Tata Tea operated actively at Kolkata and Guwahati, while there was a fair support from other packeteers. The Western India dealers were active for liquoring categories.

In the Darjeeling tea auction, whole leaf and broken grades were easier while fannings were around last. There were selective enquiries from the UK/Continent, while local buyers offered good support.

Orthodox whole leaf grades were firm to at times dearer, while brokens and fannings tended firm at last levels. There was good support from West Asian and CIS shippers and fair enquiry from the major blender.

CROP

Leaf intake in North India continues to be below that in the previous year.

INTERNATIONAL

The Mombasa market saw selected better sorts barely steady while the remainder eased in value. Sudan lent strong support while Egyptian packers maintained interest with Kazakhstan active. Pakistan packers and the UK showed less interest.

Yemen and other West Asian countries were active at lower levels. The Bazaar showed interest on selected lines, while Russia, Afghanistan and Egyptian Government Sector were quiet. Somalia maintained activity.

The Colombo auction saw less demand at easier rates for all sorts except selected better western BOPs and medium growns, which were around last, and at times tended dearer.
