Piramal Life second cancer compound enters clinical trials

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Sept. 29 Piramal Life Sciences Ltd has received regulatory approvals to start Phase I clinical trials in Canada on its new cancer compound P-1446A-05. This would be the second prospective cancer compound from PLS that has gone into clinical studies.

Explaining the significance of the compound, Dr Swati Piramal, Chairman of the company, told Business Line that the new cancer drug compound could be taken orally, unlike several other cancer-related medicines that are injectibles.

It works on solid tumours and the company expects it to be effective in a wider area, she said.

Further, she added that the company’s earlier cancer compound P276 (targeting multiple myeloma) has completed Phase I studies in Canada. Phase I clinical trials involve the first ever exposure of the compound on a group of healthy human volunteers.

PLS is the recently demerged research entity of Piramal Healthcare, and the company expects to have eight compounds undergoing clinical trials by the end of the fiscal.

Shares of Piramal Healthcare were marginally up at Rs 322.85 on the BSE.
