Record soyabean output seen

Gayathri G.

Chennai, Sept. 30 Soyabean production is headed for a record 108.17 lakh tonnes (lt) this year against 94.75 lt last year, according to the Soyabean Processors Association of India (SOPA) projections. The estimates are against the Centre pegging the oilseeds output at 99.4 lt against 99.9 lt last year.

SOPA’s projections are based on a 8 per cent rise in the area under soyabean. Conducive weather conditions have enabled farmers to sow till the early part of the third week of July, the association said.

The total area under soyabean in all States has been estaimted at 96.24 lakh hectare (lh) till September 24 compared with 88.49 lh last year, according to Indore-based association.

The acreage in Madhya Pradesh, which accounts for over half of the total soyabean crop in the country, stood at 51.43 lh with production being pegged at 57.75 lt against 48.79 lh amd 49.8 lt production, with increase in area witnessed in Ujjain, Indore, Bhopal, Guna, Shivpuri and Ashoknagar districts, SOPA said.

After the early spell of the monsoon, a gap in rains delayed sowing in most areas in Madhya Pradesh, which continued till the last week of July. However, with good germination, timely spraying of pesticides and better weed management practices, the crop sustained the drought spell, SOPA said.

The acreage in Maharashtra, No. 2 soyabean producing State, has touched 30.68 lh and production is seen at 36.47 lt, against 32.37 lt grown on 26.51lh last year. The revival of rains since July-end has resulted in narrowing of the area-gap in Latur and Nasik.
