Horticulture/Fruits & Vegetables States - Kerala Global prune body launches drive to boost consumption Our Bureau Kochi, Sept. 30 The International Prune Association has conducted a generic communication programme here aimed at educating consumers on the nutrition benefits of the dried fruit. Speaking to reporters, Ms Naini Setalvad, nutrition and food consultant, said that prunes are a source of true gourmet satisfaction and an everyday health-giving food. They are low in calories, rich in fibre and have high mineral and vitamin content. It is an ideal source of energy in a balanced diet and also helps strengthen the body’s defences. Ms Setalvad was here in connection with a talk on the health benefits of prunes to women professionals, organised by the Round Table Conference 71 at Taj Residency. She pointed out that prunes are grown in California, Chile, France, Australia, Italy and South Africa and are now available in India. Prunes contain no fat, cholesterol or sodium. Research shows that eating prunes can cut the risk of osteoporosis by helping to prevent the detrimental effects of menopause on bone density. With all these outstanding benefits, eating prunes is one of the best ways to improve digestive health, she added. Formed in Agen in France in 1990, the International Prune Association’s objectives are to set up a permanent link between world prune producers.
