Our Bureau

Gandhinagar, Sept 30 The Gujarat Government today appointed Mr D. Rajagopalan, a 1974-batch IAS officer, as the new Chief Secretary to succeed Mrs Manjula Subramaniam, who, on superannuation, was appointed as the State Vigilance Commissioner.

Mr Rajagopalan, currently Additional Chief Secretary (Finance), is largely credited with successfully showcasing Gujarat as an investment destination during his tenure as the Principal Secretary (Industry). It was under his stewardship that the State Government organised ‘Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summits’ in September 2003, January 2005 and January 2007.

Mrs Subramaniam, who retired today, was heading the State’s bureaucracy since August 31, 2007. Mr Rajagopalan’s tenure as Chief Secretary will be till July 2009. In other top bureaucratic changes, the State Government has made Mr George Joseph (1972 batch) as the new President of Gujarat Civil Services Tribunal while Mr Balwant Singh, Principal Secretary (Home),and Mr V K Babbar, Chief Electoral Officer, have both been promoted as Additional Chief Secretaries in the postings they hold at present.
