New Projects Special Engg to set up seating system plant in Chennai T. Murrali Chennai, Sept. 30 Kolkata-based GP Birla and CK Birla group-owned Special Engineering Services Ltd is setting up an assembly plant in Chennai to supply seating systems to Hindustan Motors’s new offering from the Mitsubishi stable. The Chief Executive of the company, Mr K.R. Kavra, told Business Line that Special Engineering has entered into a technical collaboration with the seating supplier of Mitsubishi, Namba Press, in Japan to develop seats for the sports utility vehicle slated for launch early next month. The company has set up the assembly plant in Ambattur at a cost of Rs 3 crore. In six months it would invest Rs 2 crore as the vehicle manufacturer is planning to increase the local content. The vehicle will have fully automatic two front seats and three middle seats. The middle seat is split in the ratio of 40:60 and can be folded at a press of a button to have more luggage space. The seats will have automatic systems for sliding, reclining, adjusting and folding and some of the features will be introduced for the first time in the country, he said. Special Engineering reported a turnover of Rs 35 crore in 2007-08 and in the current year it hopes to register Rs 60 crore. The jump was due to new orders from Mitsubishi, International Cars & Motors Ltd and Railways. By 2010 the company would cross Rs 100 crore in turnover, he said.
