Roll out 3G fast, Minister tells BSNL

‘Focus on more value-added services could bring in more revenue’.

New Delhi, Sept. 30 Concerned over the dwindling market share of BSNL in the mobile telephony space, the Communications and IT Minister, Mr A, Raja, on Tuesday asked the State-owned operator to improve the value-added services (VAS) to increase revenue, and also ensure an immediate roll-out 3G and WiMax services.

At the Heads of Circles Conference of BSNL in the Capital, the Minister called upon BSNL officials to work out a strategy to restore the corporation’s market position.

He exuded confidence that BSNL would continue to contribute over 50 per cent in achieving a national target of 20 million broadband connections by 2010.

An official statement issued here said that the Minister called upon BSNL to ensure an immediate roll-out of 3G and WI-MAX services based on the spectrum already allocated to it by the government.

Quality of service

Mr Raja urged the telecom giant to pay attention to the quality of service, customer care and responsiveness to the needs of customers in order to beat the fresh challenges of competition arising out of the impending launch of number portability.

He asked BSNL to strengthen the customer grievances redress system and emphasised the need to upgrade the skills of the technical and managerial staff and provide adequate training. Pointing to the gap between the all India tele-density of 30 per cent and the rural tele-density of 11 per cent, the Minister said that BSNL has to bridge this digital divide.
