Hyderabad, Oct. 1 The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, expressed anguish and concern at the prevailing prices of rice in the open market during a review meeting here on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister asked the Finance Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, to convene a high-level meeting with the Group of Ministers on prices, rice millers, traders, vigilance and enforcement department, civil supplies, marketing, agriculture, other departments and officials concerned.

The Chief Minister said that the rice millers should be told to bring out the held over stocks immediately to the open market. “The borders of the State should be sealed so that rice should not be allowed to move out. Also if the rice millers and traders are still not cooperating, stringent action should be initiated against them and stocks should be brought to the open market,” a release from the Chief Minister’s Office said.

He said while the farmers should get the Minimum Support Price for their produce, the consumer also should get foodgrains at a reasonable price and no middle players should be allowed to exploit the situation.

The release said that Dr Reddy opined that no genuine efforts were made in regard to bringing down the prices. He also directed that the Group of Ministers should meet every Monday and discuss all the necessary steps needed to control prices of essential commodities.

Earlier he told the Cotton Corporation of India officials that they should open the 70 procurement centres and be ready with adequate funds. He told them that the cotton farmers should be paid promptly and wanted CCI to make arrangement to send the cotton stocks for ginning and be ready to procure additional stocks this season as a record cotton production is expected.
