The Hindu Business Line : AP sees opportunity for IT industry in US bailout plan

Hyderabad, Oct. 3 Notwithstanding apprehension over the slowdown in the US and likely cascading effect on the IT and ITES sectors in India, the Andhra Pradesh Government sees an opportunity in the backdrop of US accepting the $700-billion package to bail out the ailing financial institutions there.

At a review meeting of the IT Department here on Friday, Dr Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, said the bailout plan was expected to create more work for the Indian BPO (business process outsourcing) industry. “The domestic IT industry would continue to grow,” he said.

State Date Centre

Andhra Pradesh would soon have a ‘State Data Centre’ that would house all the information technology servers of all departments with secure IT infrastructure and environment.

The project is being taken up with a Central Government assistance of Rs 56 crore. The first floor of the building would be ready by the end of October 2008. The project would be completed over a period of five years.

The officials told him that they were in the process of finalising the Scholarship Management System to allow submission of scholarship applications online. This would allow the department to deposit the scholarships directly into the bank accounts of the students. The Department was also working on a software solution to offer an eGazette.

A pilot project was started in August 2008. Besides, a C2G (Citizen to Government) interface too was under preparation.

“We have introduced file tracking systems in 10 Departments in Secretariat to help the officials zero in on the relevant files,” the IT officials told the Chief Minister.

AP wide network

The Department was also in the process of AP State Wide Area Network (APSWAN), providing connectivity to all Government offices. The Centre had approved a Rs 249-crore project in August to provide robust IT infrastructure in the State.

The State Government is in the process of developing IT Investment Region (ITIR) by identifying clusters in public private participatory model.
