Import of sensitive items up 11% in Apr-July

New Delhi, Oct 3 Import of sensitive items tracked and monitored by the Department of Commerce for their potential effect on domestic prices has shown a double-digit growth of 11 per cent during the first four months of the current fiscal, which all reflect the universal spurt in commodity prices.

An official statement issued here said the total import of sensitive items for the period April-July 2008 has been Rs 9,696 crore as compared to Rs 8,722 crore during the corresponding period of last year, thereby, showing an increase of 11.2 per cent.

The gross import of all commodities during same period of current year was Rs 42,1541 crore as compared with Rs 30,6946 crore during the same period of last year.

Thus import of sensitive item constitutes 2.8 per cent and 2.3 per cent of the gross imports during last year and current year respectively.

EATABLES DOWN

Imports of edible oil, milk and milk products and foodgrains have shown a decline at broad group level during the period.

Imports of items viz. fruits and vegetables (including nuts), cotton and silk, automobiles, products of small scale industries, spices, rubber, alcoholic beverages, marble and granite and tea and coffee have shown increase during the period under reference.

Edible oil

In the edible oil segment, the import has decreased from Rs 3,777.8 crore last year to Rs 3,698.0 crore for the corresponding period of this year.

The import of crude edible oil has gone down by 4.7 per cent and that of refined oil by 19.9 per cent.

The decrease in edible oil import is mainly due to significant fall in import of soyabean crude oil which has gone down by 55 per cent.

Other countries

Imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, Myanmar, China, US, Ivory Coast, Germany, Malaysia, Benin, Thailand, Australia, Egypt, Japan, Ghana, Korea, the UK have gone up while those from Argentina, Canada, Sri Lanka and Brazil have shown a decrease.
