Eyeing the berth of a port trustee

The failure to get a berth in the board of trustees of a port can be upsetting for a politician, particularly if the politician happens to be a Member of Parliament. Take the case of the Marxist Lok Sabha Member elected from Haldia. He is not a member of the board of trustees of Kolkata port (Haldia dock comes under Kolkata port) and he is very upset about it. He makes it very clear, that too publicly, that he is upset. His argument is simple: Haldia dock accounts for the bulk of the traffic and therefore the revenue of Kolkata port. However, there is no representative from Haldia on the board of trustees of the port. This is not fair, he says. But more important, according to him, is that politicians must be allowed to play a key role in the country’s socio-economic development as politics, in his opinion, “is the instrument of change in society”. At a convention held in Kolkata recently to highlight the problems facing Haldia dock, the MP was emphatic in his demand that the political representation on the port’s board of trustees was vital. The MP should know that the issue of representation on the board of trustees in any major port is decided by the Shipping Ministry, and as an MP he should know how and where to pull strings.
