This refers to the report “Tatas pull out of Singur; to look at Nano relocation” (Business Line, October 4). Ratan Tata’s decision to abandon the Singur Nano car project is indeed unfortunate. And the Trinamool Congress leader, Ms Mamata Banerjee, has earned the dubious distinction of having put an end to a prestigious industrial project in her home State of West Bengal, which craves for industrial development. The State Chief Minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who rolled out the red carpet for Tata Motors two years ago, could not do much in seeing the project through. In a way, it is a failure of the State Government. At least while relocating the firm the Tata group must ensure that it gets the nod, not only from the State Government but also from the major Opposition parties to avert a repetition of the Singur fiasco. S. Ramakrishnasayee Ranipet Singur syndromeTata’s Nano project in Singur has been called off, much to the disadvantage of West Bengal and to the dismay of lakhs of unemployed youth in the region. The fears of prospective investors are only going to worsen as far as the State is concerned. The cascading effect of the Singur pullout by the Tatas will be telling. This incident only highlights that politicians do not want to reason out or listen to the benefits on industrialisation. Take China, for example, a country that has managed to balance agriculture with industry. Time for us to take a leaf from their experience and not allow politicians to decide for the people.
