Southern Rly goods handling rises 21% in H1

Our Bureau

Chennai, Oct. 7 Southern Railway handled 16.8 million tonnes of goods during the first-half of the current fiscal, an increase of 21 per cent when compared with the corresponding period of the last year. Handling in the first-half was 9 per cent more than the target set by the Ministry of Railways.

Loading improved in all commodities with the exception of petroleum products, which was affected by the shut down of the CPCL refinery at Manali. All divisions of SR achieved high growth in commodities, according to a press release from Southern Railway.

The marketed traffic of steel from Salem division crossed one lakh tonnes for the first time on SR. While the overall loading of petroleum products has not improved, loading from Cochin Refinery is up 25 per cent. Loading in the Chennai division has shown a 9 per cent increase in coal handling and a 13 per cent increase in container traffic, the press release says.
