Siemens sets up new arm for rail transportation sector

Alka Kshirsagar

Pune, Oct. 9 Engineering goods manufacturer Siemens Ltd has set up a new, wholly-owned subsidiary company to tap the potential in the Indian rail transportation sector.

The move comes in the wake of Siemens acquiring land at Aurangabad to establish a facility to manufacture rolling stock, including coaches for trains and metros.

The recently formed Siemens Rolling Stock Pvt Ltd (SRSPL) is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Siemens Ltd handling the Rolling Stock business in India, the company confirmed in response to a query.

Elaborating upon the subject, Mr V.B. Parulekar, Director, Siemens Ltd and Head, Mobility Division in India said, “The rail transportation sector in India presents a huge business potential with many project plans being announced by the government. This offers interesting opportunities for Siemens.”

The company already has a significant presence in Aurangabad with three existing factories, including a new facility for instrument transformers that was recently inaugurated. “To address the growing business needs and market demands, we are actively looking at enhancing our capacities in various locations in India including at Aurangabad,” Mr Parulekar said.

Though Siemens did not give any more details, in July Business Line had reported the company’s intent to enter into this completely new business segment in India. According to sources, the first product to roll out under the aegis of SRSPL will be metro coaches. The greenfield factory at the Shendra industrial estate at Aurangabad is expected to involve an initial expenditure of Rs 500 crore and is expected to go on stream within a year’s time.
