Airlines SriLankan, Etihad Airways in code sharing agreement Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 9 SriLankan Airlines and the Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways have announced a new code sharing agreement. According to a SriLankan press release, the airline will begin code sharing on Etihad’s flights to Amman, Geneva, Dublin, Munich, Brussels and Manchester, while Etihad will do the same on SriLankan’s flights to Male in Maldives. The two airlines have worked together since September 2007 when Etihad started code sharing on SriLankan’s flights on the Abu Dhabi-Colombo sector, the release added. A code sharing agreement enables an airline to sell seats on a flight operated by another airline. Code sharing between airlines enables passengers to fly to more destinations, while for airlines such an arrangement provides an opportunity to connect to more destinations without investment in additional aircraft and infrastructure. The two airlines have also signed an agreement to link their respective frequent flyer programmes. Under the agreement, members of the frequent flyer programmes of both airlines will be able to earn and redeem points when travelling on all Etihad and SriLankan flights, including those covered by the new code sharing agreement.
