Our Bureau

Chennai, Oct. 9 Rural India requires widespread awareness to control and prevent diabetes, said Ms Ann Keen, Minister for Health Services, UK.

The Minister was in Chennai with a 25-member business, research and development delegation to highlight UK’s new global strategy for healthcare and to explore opportunities for collaboration in diabetes.

Addressing a press conference, Ms Keen said the new strategy “Health is Global” sets out how the government intends to work with international partners such as WHO, other governments, business and civil society to improve global health.

Target India

The health minister said data pertaining to India being the diabetes capital of the world is already known. It is here we would like to partner with India in providing education, new technologies and specialised areas of diabetes care in controlling the sugar disease, she said.

The delegation from UK is in India to identify business opportunities, to form collaborations and strategic alliances with Indian companies and organisations, which offer healthcare expertise.

Ms Keen said that a strategy for treating diabetes was implemented in the UK in 2001 called National Service Framework for Diabetes which set out 12 standards of diabetes care.

According to the Diabetes Atlas published by the International Diabetes Federation, it is estimated that 40 million people live with diabetes or diabetes-related illnesses in India in 2007 and this is likely to rise to 70 million by 2025.
