Taipei, Oct. 9 ASUSTeK is all set to introduce its “really small desktop PC”, Eee Box, in India. A desktop equivalent of Eee PC, Eee box was showcased by the company in trade shows in June and was launched in North America, Japan and some Asian markets subsequently.

The launch date is October 15, according to Mr Benson Lin, General Manager, APEC–MEA sales group, ASUSTeK.

The Eee Box is going to be available at Tata group’s digital retail chain, Croma and also through the regular dealership channels. While exact pricing is not available, it is expected to cost in the Rs 12,000-13,000 range.

A low-cost, less-power-hungry desktop, Eee Box is smaller than an A4 sheet of paper and is an inch thick. The small foot-print not only saves space, it also come with an option of eliminating any need for deskspace: one can mount the Eee Box to the back of any VESA-compatible LCD monitor. It also saves up to 90 per cent in energy consumption, according to the company factsheets.

Eee Box B202, the model that is going to debut in India, runs on Intel Atom processor N270 (1.6 GHz, and comes with Windows XP Home as the operating system). It has an 80GB hard disk and comes with 1 GB RAM. A four-in-one memory card and four USB ports complete the essential specifications. Wireless LAN 802.11 b/g/n and a regular LAN port provide the connectivity.

It is also working out a tie-up with Reliance Communications on its Eee PC range of Netbooks. Under this partnership, customers can buy Eee PCs equipped with Reliance’s wireless cards at special rates.

The instalment option that is being worked out “may cost the buyer as low as Rs 1,500 a month under a two year plan” for the PC, the wireless card and the usage. “Starting from this month, we are going to be very aggressive in India. We believe it’s a huge market for all our products,” Mr Benson Lin said.
