Dealers call for ban on rubber import

Our Bureau

Kochi, Oct. 10 With rubber prices crashing from Rs 137 to Rs 85 a kg during the past fortnight, rubber dealers have called for a ban on further duty-free imports of rubber, at least for six months. Many dealers have lost heavily and most of their working capital has been sharply eroded and now the growers will have to face the brunt of the setback in prices, a press release from the Cochin Rubber Merchants Association said. The State also stands to lose substantial revenue from value-added tax collections.

May hit growers

Unless the Centre takes action, over 1 million rubber growers would be in distress and it would affect the entire socio-economic fabric of Kerala, the association said.
