Tuticorin port to create infrastructural facilities

Chennai, Oct. 13 The Tuticorin Port Trust plans to create additional infrastructural facilities for the port-based industries and services such as thermal power station, oil refinery, container terminal and cold storage plant.

It will allot around 150 acres of land at Hare Island located within the port for companies to set up large facilities, according to Mr G.J. Rao, Chairman, Tuticorin Port Trust.

Depending on the project, the investment in the new facility could range between Rs 500 crore (for a container terminal) and Rs 2,500 crore (for an oil refinery).

The land has a water front of around one km and is well protected by the port trust. It will be suitable for private companies planning to set up industries by importing new cargoes through the port. The port trust will participate under the private-public-partnership mode, he said.

The port trust will allot around 150 acres (excluding 8.9 acres already allotted to IMC Ltd for tank farms) to companies at Hare Island on a long-term lease basis. It will also offer 100 hectares of reclaimed land, which may be available within two to three years.

Shore area

The shore area of the site is suitable for constructing shallow draught jetty to handle lighterage vessels/barges transportation of bulk cargo from the deep-draught vessels anchored at 18 m depth.

The present operating draught at Tuticoirn is 10.70 m and will be enhanced to 12.80 m during 2009-10.

Traffic forecast

A traffic forecast study says that the port is likely to handle around 50 million tonnes of cargo during 2011-12 and 100 mt in 2020-21, says a tender issued by the port trust inviting companies for expression of interest for development of port-based industries.
