Bangalore, Oct. 13

Volvo’s Indian plant plans to export about 200 complete buses to South Africa sometime next year.

The Volvo Bus Corporation Senior Vice-President, Mr Rune Lundberg, told newspersons on the sidelines of the launch of multi-axle buses in India that South Africa had similar kind of needs as that of India. “There would, of course, be some kind of homologation once we decide to export buses to South Africa,” he said.

Earlier, the Volvo Buses India Ltd, Managing Director, Mr Akash Passey, said the list price of the new multi-axle Volvo 9400 6X2 will be around Rs 85 lakh, while that of the existing Volvo 9400 4X2 (B7R) is around Rs 72 lakh.

The multi-axle buses are typically used for long distance routes and are equipped with electronic braking system and have nine litre, 340 HP engine. They are 13.7 metre long, which is about 1.7 metre longer than the B7R buses.

The multi-axle buses have on board computer display providing data on information regarding engine, brakes and suspension. It also has frontal impact safety and roll over protection.

Mr Passey said three customers have already ordered for the multi-axle buses and 20 more are on order. He said Volvo expects to make about 140 multi-axle buses next year. This year, it plans to make 450 buses and the next year about 550 buses.

He added that Volvo has already supplied half of the 240 buses ordered by the Bangalore Metro Transport Corporation.
