Hyderabad, Oct. 13 Max Retail plans to set up 30 stores in the country by March next. It has expressed its intent to tap into non metros by offering opportunity to franchisees.

Announcing the opening of its second store in Hyderabad, the company’s Executive Director, Mr Vasanth Kumar, said that the store in Hyderabad is its 17th in the country and 78th across the world.

“We are extremely positive on the market opportunity for such stores in India and our plan is to establish about 100 stores by 2010, of them 50 would be through the franchisee route. We will provide all the material and help partners set up stores,” he said.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr Kumar said that typically, each store will have an investment of about Rs 4 crore. Of this, Rs 2 crore will be in merchandise and the rest in infrastructure.

Max Retail is part of the Dubai-based Landmark group. The company has tied up with over 50 design houses and has the merchandise designed to its own specifications. This also helps bring down the cost of goods retailed through these stores, he said.

The company has tied up with infrastructure company Shanta Sriram for setting up Oasis stores in India.

This is the second Oasis store, the first being in Bangalore. Each of these stores hosts not just Max Retail, but also group companies Splash, Home Store and Spar (a supermarket).

Referring to its pricing strategy, Mr Kumar said that most of the goods are marketed below Rs 599, making even international brands affordable to the common man. The idea of locating different format stores at one place is to attract a family to shop for their entire household requirements.

Max Retail plans four more stores in Hyderabad and one each in Vijayawada and Vizag respectively during the year, he said.
