Tea prices turn buoyant on demand in Coonoor sales

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Oct 13 After last week’s reversal, market once again turned buoyant on Friday as demand was generally adequate to absorb the 13.44 lakh kg offered at sale No: 41 of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) auctions. On an average, prices rose Rs 2 a kg.

The bottom level increased to a new-high of Rs 72 a kg from last week’s Rs 68. The previous-high was Rs 70 a fortnight ago. Consequently, exporters had to pay more to build stocks.

Egypt picks CTC dust

On the high-end range, CIS bought bolder CTC leaf up to Rs 74 a kg and Egypt picked up CTC dusts paying up to Rs 96. Poland’s bids ranged Rs 66-70. Pakistan restricted its purchases to smaller brokens and fannings. There was some purchase for Tunisia, Iraq and European ports.

“Better medium and medium CTC leaf grades saw improved demand at Re 1-Rs 3 a kg more and bolder brokens Rs 2-3 up. But, some brighter-liquoring teas suffered withdrawal for want of high-end bids. Orthodox invoices fetched premiums matching quality. Flaky sorts, however, lost Rs 5. Improved liquoring CTC dusts fetched handsome premiums. Many got Rs 4-6 more. Medium sorts advanced by Rs 3-5. Plainers fetched Rs 2-4 more. Clean secondary orthodox dusts gained Rs 4-6. Powdery residuals advanced up to Rs 4,” an auctioneer told Business Line.

CTC ON DEMAND

Among CTC teas from bought-leaf factories, Darmona Estate, auctioned by J Thomas & Co, fetched the highest bid of Rs 120 a kg for two dust grades – RD and SRD. Two of its leaf grades also shot to Rs 100 price-band – BOPF (Rs 115) and BP (Rs 105).
