SSI States - Tamil Nadu Small industrial units seek 2-day power holiday Our Bureau Chennai, Oct. 13 More than one lakh small and tiny industrial units in Tamil Nadu are to participate in a one-day strike on October 22 to draw the State Government’s attention to problems caused by the power shortage and issues relating to diesel supply for power generation. Mr D. Gandhikumar, President, Tanstia, said the State should make the power cut official and announce a staggered holiday one day a week apart from a weekly holiday. The two-day ‘power holiday’ a week could be implemented by turns in specified zones across the State, which would help the industries plan their production schedules. He said the State’s decision to cut power daily or insisting on industries not to draw power from the grid during peak hours was severely hitting the productivity and operations of the industries. Also, instead of cutting off power, the State Government could set a maximum limit on the number of units of power a manufacturer could use and penalise those who draw in excess. The burden of the power shortage should be borne by all the consumers including industrial, commercial and domestic segments, he said. The State Government has committed to supplying uninterrupted power to multinational corporations and new investments. Large industries should use their captive power plants instead of depending on the grid. The State Government should compensate the industries for the additional cost of using the diesel powered generator sets, he said. Tanstia also criticised the Government for insisting that industries in the State buying diesel for power generation should go to Essar Oil which retails diesel at around Rs 50 a litre for bulk buyers.
