‘Dis’integration?

From news emanating from the proceedings of National Integration Council meet, one wonders whether it serves any useful purpose as it seems to be transforming into a ‘National Disintegration Council’. It has been reported that the Gujarat Chief Minister sat quietly, listening to the verbal duel between the Home Minister, Mr Shivraj Patil and the Orissa Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik over deployment of paramilitary forces in the State which is battling a wave of religious attacks.

Even Mr Modi’s silence was an eloquent demonstration of his views on terrorism which he anyway aired through TV interviews. Then there was a war of words regarding the non-inclusion of ‘terrorism’ in the NIC agenda.

Though the NIC was started with good intentions, it seems to be achieving little. Integration involves ‘give and take’, but all the parties involved in the meetings want to give but not take.
