Magna unit gets orders from Hyundai, Japan co

T. Murrali

Recently in Toronto Magna Powertrain, part of the $26 billion Magna International based in Canada, has received an order from Hyundai Motor and a Japanese passenger car manufacturer in India to supply water pumps and other powertrain components.

Speaking to a group of Indian journalists who were on a trip to Canada sponsored by Magna to visit its facilities, the General Manager of Magna Powertrain, Mr Kai Jacobsen, said though the development of water pump for Hyundai happened in Korea, alongside the engine development of the vehicle manufacturer, the product will be manufactured by one of Magna’s joint ventures in India. In addition to water pumps, Magna would supply a few components for small displacement four cylinder engines, for the Japanese car manufacturer, he said.

Magna has three 50:50 joint venture companies in India. Lumax Magna Donnelly Automotive Mirrors Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between Magna Donnelly and Lumax Automotive Systems at Mannesar manufactures vision systems such as interior mirrors, exterior mirrors and door handles.

Magna Powertrain Amtek, the joint venture with Amtek Auto at Dhuaruhera makes components for powertrain systems such as water and oil pumps, transmission, all-wheel drive systems, drive and axle systems.

The joint venture with Rico Auto, Magna Powertain Rico Auto makes oil and water pumps with aluminium housings for automotive engine applications for Indian and European markets.

The joint venture route for aluminium die castings is primarily due to the intricacies in manufacturing, he said.

Besides sourcing aluminium die castings, the joint venture partner will develop water pumps for 1.3, 1.5 and 1.8 litre, four cylinder engines.

Magna Powertrain is also looking at developing rocker arm and cam cover in plastics. Asked if the company would replace aluminium with plastics, he said, “due to increasing crude oil prices the cost competitiveness of plastics is also reducing. However, we could reduce the weight.”
