Ms Chitra V. Menon, Assistant Manager, Geojit Financial Services Ltd, speaking at the Business Line Club meet at St Xaviers College, Aluva, on Friday. V. Sajeev Kumar Kochi, Oct. 17 The Business Line Club organised a lecture on capital markets at St Xaviers College, Aluva, on Friday as part of a campus interface with the corporate world. Interacting with students from the Department of Commerce, Ms Chitra V. Menon, Assistant Manager, Geojit Financial Services Ltd, emphasised the need to invest in the capital markets in a wise and productive way. As students of commerce, she said, they need to apply their minds to find more investment avenues, in order to make better returns. Savings should be channelised to appropriate avenues and good investments would grow at a rate faster than inflation, she added. Ms Menon reminded students to follow the golden words adopted in the share business: “Invest early, invest regularly and invest in the long term” before entering the world of shares. Word of cautionShe cited different forms of investment in the capital market, like equity shares, corporate debentures, gold, real estate, and bank deposits and explained what the primary market, secondary market, depository, role of stock exchanges, stock market index and so on meant. However, she sounded caution on the risks involved while assessing risk return and liquidity profile for investment. The introduction of screen-based trading in the country’s stock exchanges in 1994 has ensured transparency, Ms Menon said, adding that it has proved to be more efficient than the age old practice of ‘outcry system’. Because of this transparency and compulsory rolling settlement adopted in share trading, Indian stock exchanges are receiving overwhelming admiration from several foreign stock exchanges, she said. MF avenuesComing to mutual fund investments, she said that it is a pool of money collected from investors and invested according to stated investment objectives. The advantages of MF investments are that of professional management, reduction in risk, liquidity, portfolio diversification, convenience and flexibility. Earlier, Mr K.P. Narayanan, Assistant Regional General Manager of The Hindu, Kochi, welcomed the gathering. More Stories on : Stock Markets | Education | BL Club | Kerala
